Shopping for sex toys can quickly become overwhelming, right? Between all the shapes and sizes, the different materials, and the vast range of price points, it can be hard to know where to start. And even if you know what you want, how do you know a toy will meet your needs? That's a whole lot of what-ifs!
But if one of those "what ifs" is "What if I want it to be just like my favourite real-life penis?" we've got some good news for you. While you can't exactly walk into a shop and say, "Give me a dildo shaped like my partner!" you can make your own. And we're not talking about a sad DIY disaster you don't want to put anywhere near your body. Thanks to convenient kits, you can make a real, usable dildo out of body-safe, nonporous, easy-to-clean silicone. You can even make it vibrate!
So, let's talk about making your dildo. Why you would want to do it, whether it is safe, and how on earth you would even go about it (spoiler alert: it's easier than you'd think). Hold on to your hats, folks; it's time to talk about how to make a dildo!
Why would you ever make a homemade dildo?
Okay, first things first, why would someone make a homemade dildo? Well there are several reasons, including but not limited to:
- Wanting a totally unique sex toy that no one else has
- Wanting a toy that is shaped just like a specific person's penis
- Wanting to engage in a fun and sexy craft project
- They feel like sex toys are expensive, and they can probably put something together out of the stuff they have kicking around their house.
If you can relate to reasons 1, 2, or 3, making a dildo might be for you. Suppose you are thinking more along the lines of reason 4. In that case, I'd advise you to stop right there as trying to DIY a dildo from stuff you have on hand is a recipe for one of those embarrassing "sex landed me in the ER" stories, and we've come such a long way in terms of safe, high-quality, affordable sex toys. Trust me, if you want to save money, you are safer investigating lower-cost silicone toy options.
Is it safe to make a dildo?
Is making a dildo even safe? The answer can be no, but it can also be a huge resounding yes! Allow me to elaborate.
As I've already mentioned, trying to fashion a dildo out of stuff you have around the house falls under the "unsafe" category, but there are safe ways to make your very own dildo(s). These include gathering the proper materials, learning about pouring molds, etc. All that said, for most of us, the safest way to make a dildo is to use a kit like the ones from Clone-a-Willy.
There are several kinds of Clone-a-Willy kits available:
Original Clone-A-Willy Vibrator Kit
As its name implies, this is the first one! Available in light, medium, and dark skin tones, this kit features everything you need to make a super-detailed high-quality silicone cock clone, complete with a removable vibrator so your dildo can buzz when you want it to.
Clone-A-Willy Glow in the Dark Kit
If the original kit sounds great, but you'd prefer a more fun color option, this one's for you. Available in blue, hot pink, or neon purple silicone, these kits contain everything the OG kit does, but the result is a dildo that (surprise!) glows in the dark!
Clone-A-Willy & Balls Vibe Kit
If you want the whole package, Clone-a-Willy's got you covered with this kit designed to create a perfect duplicate of your partner's cock AND balls. It comes with everything the original equipment has, plus some added supplies to help you successfully mold testicles.
Okay, now that we know what to use, how do we do this?
How do you make a dildo?
Now that you're ready to make your dildo, let's talk about the details! Before we get down to it, there are some things to remember. So far, we've been assuming that you want to make a mold of a partner's penis, but that's not the only circumstance in which one might make a dildo!
If you are making a dildo replica of your penis: While you can probably manage this process on your own, it will be much easier if you have an extra set of hands. So, if there is someone you trust to engage in an intimate procedure like this with you, by all means, enlist them.
If you want to make a nonrepresentational dildo (aka one that doesn't look like a penis): That is also totally doable here! Yes, the kit is called "Clone-a-Willy", but you can certainly mold and clone any phallic shape you desire.
Making a Clone-a-Willy:
Unpack and make sure you have everything:
Your package should include the following:
- One molding tube
- One package of molding powder
- Two containers of silicone mix
- One vibrator unit
- One thermometer
- 1 stir stick
- Instruction sheet
READ THE INSTRUCTIONS
Seriously. I cannot stress this enough. Do it a couple of times.
Size the molding tube.
Get the penis in question fully erect, place the molding tube next to the penis with the closed end towards the body, and mark the line where the penis ends. That mark is where you want to cut the tube to make it the right length. After cutting, put some tape around the newly cut edge so it doesn't scratch the body when you use the tube to mold the penis.
Prepare the molding material.
Mix the packet of molding powder with water in a bowl. Follow the instructions precisely so you don't use too much or too little water, which could mess up your mould. Also, try to avoid air bubbles in your mold, as they will result in bubbles in your dildo. Once the material is mixed, pour it into that tube you sized earlier.
Make the mold
Once again, make sure the penis in question is erect. (use a cock ring if you can - the penis will need to stay erect throughout the molding process) Insert the fully erect penis into the molding material in the tube. Keep it in the center so the mold forms completely around it, with an even amount of material on all sides. Hold the tube steady for a minute or two to let the mold firm up and take shape. When time is up (follow your enclosed instructions), you can slide the penis out and place the mold to the side.
Mix the silicone
Just like you mixed the mold material, mix the silicone. Remember, air bubbles are bad!
Pour the silicone
Once the silicone is thoroughly mixed, slowly pour it into the mold a little at a time, gently shaking the tube as you go. Shaking will help eliminate air bubbles and make for a better finished product.
Insert the vibrator
Gently slide the vibrator into the silicone, keeping it centered the whole way down.
Let it sit
Now, for both the easiest and hardest part of the endeavor - wait at least 24 hours for your dildo to harden.
Take it out
After 24 hours, you can take out your dildo and wonder at what you've created!
Your dildo is now ready for use. But first, let's take a minute to talk about taking care of it.
How to clean a homemade dildo?
Clone-a-Willy dildos are made with medical grade, pure silicone, which makes them nonporous (no little holes to trap bacteria and gunk) and easy to clean. The vibrator part is water resistant but not waterproof, so while you can clean around it, you may also want to pop it out (a little gentle wiggling while pulling on the dildo end should do the trick) to be safe. Here are some cleaning options:
- Soap and Water: Yes, you can wash your dildo with mild soap and water.
- Dishwasher: for a deep clean, you can run it through your dishwasher on the top rack without dishes or detergent. In this case, you'll definitely need to remove the vibe (if applicable) first.
- Boil: if you want to be sanitary AF, submerge your dildo in boiling water for 3 to 5 minutes. Again, remove the vibe first.
After you've done any of these things, allow your dildo to air dry completely and then store it in a box or bag in a clean, dry place.
